What is all the fuss about Hemp?

Hemp has actually been around for several centuries in the United States, however, it was actually banished for many years. Despite there being many commercial uses for components derived from the Cannabis Sativa Hemp plant, it was demonized because of its close relation to the Marijuana plant.

However, there is quite a big difference between the Hemp plant and Marijuana plants. While they share the same parent (Cannabis Sativa) they are different in that they do not share all of the same compounds that are found inside the plant. The plants look identical on the outside and that is the primary reason for so much of the confusion.

History of the Hemp plant in the United States

In the 18th and 19th centuries in the United States, industrial hemp was legally cultivated and many products were made from all parts of the plant. One of the primary products the was made from the hemp plant was the rope. The stalk of the hemp plant is extremely fibrous and the fibers were used to make among other things rope.

What is the hype over hemp?

Unfortunately, during the 20th-century things all changed and it was mainly because of the Marijuana plant and because they are both parts of the Cannabis Sativa family. It all started when the US Congress passed the Controlled Substance Act of 1970 as a part of the War on Drugs.

This put a total halt to all cultivation of the Hemp plant due to its being part of the Cannabis Sativa family. After the passage of the Controlled Substance Act any permits to allow cultivation of the hemp plant had to be issued by the DEA. The primary reason for the ban is that the Cannabis Sativa species of the plant contains the compound THC (a psychoactive substance) and is officially still on the DEA's list of controlled dangerous substances.

Even though the hemp plant contains a minute amount of THC, up until 2018, it was still officially banned from cultivation. That all changed, when in 2018 the US Congress decided that as part of the new Farm Bill that the industrial hemp plant would be allowed to be cultivated in the US once again.

Legal in all 50 States in the United States

With the passing of the Farm Bill in 2018, it was officially legal to grow, process and produce products for sale in all 50 states. With more than one hundred or more products that contain compounds that were derived from the hemp plant, it is likely soon to be one of the biggest cash crops being cultivated in the United States based on the number of crops being cultivated throughout the US.

Currently, while the number of products that contain components derived from the hemp plant,b by far the most widely known of these products has to be ones containing CBD. These products are used for medicinal purposes and have been widely accepted.

What is CBD?

CBD is one of the more than 100 compounds found in the hemp plant. Cannabidiol or CBD is a compound that has been discovered to have a number of medicinal uses. Since the hemp plant is legal to be cultivated in all 50 states, any products containing CBD obtained from the hemp plant are also legal. However, this is not true of any products the contain CBD extracted from the marijuana plant.

Now, to be clear, there have been many states that have over the past several years moved to allow medical marijuana to be used legally within the state. However,  technically, this does not change federal law and any product containing THC is still illegal in the US and subject to imprisonment and fines if caught and convicted.
